What Is a Pondless Waterfall?

A pondless waterfall is exactly what it sounds like: the beauty and sound of a natural flowing stream or cascading waterfall — without an open pond. Water flows over rocks and down a stream bed, then disappears into a hidden underground reservoir below. With the push of a button, it comes back to life. No visible basin. No standing water. Just the soothing sound of moving water and the natural aesthetic of a stream running through your landscape.

How a Pondless Waterfall Works

The magic of a pondless waterfall is surprisingly simple — and that simplicity is part of what makes it so low maintenance.

  • The reservoir — A large underground basin is excavated and lined, then filled with a special matrix of wicking blocks that hold water without collapsing under the weight of the rocks above. This is where all the water lives when the feature is off.
  • The pump — A submersible pump sits inside the reservoir and pushes water up through a pipe hidden beneath the rocks and stream bed.
  • The stream or falls — Water emerges at the top, flows naturally over and between carefully placed boulders and gravel, and makes its way back down into the reservoir — where the cycle starts again.
  • The controls — A simple switch or timer turns the whole system on and off. Many of our clients use a smart outlet so they can control it from their phone.

No pond. No standing water. No complicated filtration. Just a continuous, self-contained loop that looks and sounds completely natural.

Should You Choose a Pondless Waterfall or a Fountain?

This is one of the most common questions we hear — and it’s a great one. Both fountains and pondless waterfalls can be put on a timer, but the experience they create is very different.

Fountains produce a pleasant spray or bubbling sound — clean, simple, and easy to maintain. They work beautifully in formal gardens or tight spaces.

A pondless waterfall, on the other hand, mimics the sound and look of a natural stream. The water rolls over rocks, tumbles down a slope, and creates that deep, calming sound you’d hear walking through the woods near a brook. If you’ve ever sat near a natural stream and felt your shoulders drop — that’s what a pondless waterfall brings to your backyard.

Most of our clients who choose a pondless waterfall tell us the same thing: they want that sound. Not a fountain. A stream.

The Pondless Advantage

Why Southern New England Homeowners Choose a Pondless Waterfall

100% Mosquito-Free

No standing water means no breeding ground for mosquitoes. Perfect for wooded towns like Richmond, Exeter, and Hopkinton where mosquitoes are a real concern.

Child Safe & Pet Friendly

While any water feature requires awareness, the absence of an open body of standing water virtually eliminates the primary safety concern associated with backyard ponds. Ideal for busy households with young children and pets.

Built for New England Winters

Simply turn it off in November and restart in spring. Or leave it running to create stunning natural ice sculptures as water flows over frozen stone. No heaters, no de-icers, no stress.

Low Maintenance

No fish, no filtration systems, no algae battles. Most homeowners do a simple annual cleanout in the spring and occasional top-offs during dry summer stretches.

Perfect for Dense Neighborhoods

Even modest-sized yards in neighborhoods like Newport, Barrington, and Bristol can accommodate a beautiful pondless waterfall.

Adds Real Value

A professionally installed water feature enhances curb appeal and outdoor living enjoyment for years to come.

Our Design & Installation Process

Here’s what to expect when you work with Domina’s Agway:

Step 1 — Consultation ($500, credited back to your final invoice)

Most pondless waterfall installations are completed in one to three days depending on the size of the feature and your site conditions. We handle everything from excavation to the final rock placement.
Very little compared to a traditional pond. Because there are no fish and no large open body of water, you don't need complex filtration or regular water treatments. Most homeowners do a simple annual cleanout in the spring and occasional top-offs of water during dry stretches in summer. That's about it.
Yes. This is one of the advantages of a pondless system in our climate. Because there's no open pond, winterizing is straightforward. Many of our clients simply turn the feature off in late fall and restart it in spring. We offer seasonal maintenance packages to handle this for you if you'd prefer.
It's much safer than a traditional pond — and that's one of the most common reasons families choose a pondless waterfall. While any water feature carries some degree of awareness, the absence of an open body of standing water virtually eliminates the primary safety concern associated with backyard ponds. The water drains back into a buried reservoir beneath the rocks, leaving no exposed pool of water for children or pets to fall into.

A properly installed pondless waterfall using quality Aquascape components can last 20 years or more. The liner, pump, and rock work are all built to hold up through New England winters and heavy use. Pumps typically last 5 to 10 years and are straightforward to replace when needed.

In many cases, yes. If you have an existing pondless waterfall that needs repair, a cleanout, or a renovation, reach out and we'll take a look. We service water features throughout Rhode Island, Eastern Connecticut, and Southern Massachusetts.

A traditional pond holds an open body of water and typically supports fish and aquatic plants. It requires more ongoing maintenance — filtration, water quality testing, feeding if you have koi. A pondless waterfall gives you the sights and sounds of moving water without the open pond. It's lower maintenance, safer for families with young children, and often a better fit for smaller or sloped yards.

Pet photos with Santa are my favorite annual holiday tradition, and Domina’s Agway is always our go-to. We love coming here every year for this event. The store is beautifully decorated with stunning trees, wreaths, and holiday décor, and it’s always fun browsing everything else along the way (including turtles and fish!). Thank you for another wonderful event and for the treats for all. We’ll definitely be back soon to pick up more dog toys!

Domina’s Agway has kept my ponds looking great year-round. It’s nice to know when I am not there that they are being cared for so well. And when I am there, I can enjoy them rather than having to work too. And Monika is always quick to follow up with me when I do not respond to make sure all is set. Customer Service is first class.

We are beginner gardeners and the staff was extremely helpful, attentive, and encouraging of our new hobby. Bring the kids along, as there are fish and turtle ponds. This is the kind of place I would have brought my kids when they were toddlers, had I known about it then!
