How to Diagnose a Pond Leak

Losing water and don’t know where to start?

You’re not alone. Most pond owners waste weeks guessing where the leak is. Use this simple 5-step process to find it fast.

5 Simple Steps to Find Your Leak:

  1. Check for evaporation first — Mark your normal water level and check it after 24–48 hours. Losing more than 1–2 inches per week usually means you have a leak.
  2. Turn your pump completely off for 24 hours and monitor the water level.
  3. Observe what happens — If the water drops with the pump off, the leak is in the pond basin. If it stays the same, the leak is in your waterfall or stream.
  4. Let the water drop until it stops — The leak is almost always located right at or just above where the water level finally stops dropping.
  5. Inspect that area closely — Look for low edges, gaps around the skimmer, or tears in the liner.
