How to Diagnose a Pond Leak
Losing water and don’t know where to start?
You’re not alone. Most pond owners waste weeks guessing where the leak is. Use this simple 5-step process to find it fast.
5 Simple Steps to Find Your Leak:
- Check for evaporation first — Mark your normal water level and check it after 24–48 hours. Losing more than 1–2 inches per week usually means you have a leak.
- Turn your pump completely off for 24 hours and monitor the water level.
- Observe what happens — If the water drops with the pump off, the leak is in the pond basin. If it stays the same, the leak is in your waterfall or stream.
- Let the water drop until it stops — The leak is almost always located right at or just above where the water level finally stops dropping.
- Inspect that area closely — Look for low edges, gaps around the skimmer, or tears in the liner.

It’s nice to know when I am not there that they are being cared for so well. And when I am there, I can enjoy them rather than having to work too. And Monika is always quick to follow up with me when I do not respond to make sure all is set. We are beginner gardeners and the staff was extremely helpful, attentive, and encouraging of our new hobby. Bring the kids along, as there are fish and turtle ponds. This is the kind of place I would have brought my kids when they were toddlers, had I known about it then!
